Snopes
Snopes
Barbara and David Mikkelson
Consider Barbara and David Mikkelson your own personal fact-checking department. The Southern California couple's tireless efforts to debunk (or confirm) viral rumors, urban legends, spam fraud, and other kernels of dubious veracity have made them online 21st century folk heroes—their work referenced by CNN and Fox News alike.
No coincidence that the name Snopes brings to mind the words "snoops," "sleuths," and a certain infamous literary family (named after the unsavory Snopes clan created by William Faulkner). More than 6 million visitors are drawn each month to the 14-year-old site to find out if onions really do ward off swine flu or whether the Obama administration is truly giving free cell phones to welfare moms. —KC
