INS Airavat Warship Commissioned In Visakhapatnam
The Indian Navy on Tuesday (May 19) commissioned warship INS Airavat into the naval fleet at the Eastern Naval Command (ENC) base in Visakhapatnam. The new warship is capable of carrying 10 main battle tanks, 11 combat trucks and 500 troops. According to a naval officer, apart from undertaking amphibious operations, INS Airavat is capable of providing viable platform for operating both Sea King and Dhruv helicopters. The warship is also equipped with two indigenous rocket launchers to support its amphibious operations.

Prabhat Patnaik in U.N. task force
Noted economist and Kerala State Planning Board Vice-Chairman Prabhat Patnaik has been included in a four-member high power task force of the United Nations (U.N.) to recommend reform of the global financial system. The task force is to be headed by Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz.
Prof. Patnaik, a trenchant critic of neo-liberalism, is the only Asian economist to figure in the panel constituted by United Nations General Assembly president Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann.

Born on 13 July 1939 at Bijnaur, Uttar Pradesh, India, Mehra started in the late 1950s as a production controller. In 1968, he directed Shashi Kapoor who played a double role in Haseena Maan Jayegi. This was followed by the 1971 hit Mela starring the Khan brothers (Feroz Khan and Sanjay Khan) together. In 1973, he produced and directed Zanjeer. This mega blockbuster with Amitabh Bachchan started a relationship that spanned 7 more films, 6 being huge blockbusters (Khoon Pasina, Hera Pheri, Muquaddar ka Sikander, Laawaris, Namak Halal, Sharaabi, Jaadugar). It also launched the career of Bachchan (along with Mehra), as a top director/actor duo.
Top Maoist leader of Andhra Pradesh Patel Sudhakar Reddy, allegedly involved in several high-profile cases including a bid on the life of former chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, was killed along with a colleague in an encounter with police here today. Indian-American girl wins Spelling Bee (rediff)
Thirteen-year-old Kavya Shivshankar from Kansas has won the prestigious Scripps Spelling Bee championship trophy after a keenly-fought contest that was dominated by youngsters from the community.
The Indian American kid was declared the Spelling Bee champion after she correctly spelled 'laodicean' at the end of the grilling championship finals, which included 11students from all across the country, seven of whom happened to be Indian-Americans.
